Paris in 5 Days: The Complete Couple's Trip 🇫🇷

The definitive route: City, Art, and the Grandeur of Versailles

A Real Guide to Paris

Paris is a global epicenter of art, culture, and history. Known as the City of Light, its streets, boulevards, and monuments reflect its rich heritage. From historic cafés that served as meeting points for intellectuals to iconic bridges over the Seine, every element of the city contributes to its legendary reputation. This itinerary is designed for a trip ideally in May, taking advantage of the good weather.

We recommend staying in Le Marais (4th Arrondissement). It is a quiet and central area that makes it easy to access much of the city on foot. Proximity to Place de la République and its metro station ensures excellent connectivity 🚇.

🤓
Weather Consideration

Paris receives rain 70% of the days of the year. A folding umbrella in your backpack is your best friend.

💡
Practical Tip 💡

Tickets for main attractions like the Eiffel Tower, Versailles, and the Louvre must be booked in advance. Even if tickets seem sold out, it is common for them to become available again by checking the website periodically 🎟️.

This guide compiles our personal trip step-by-step, including rainy days, gastronomic stops that were worth it, and tricks to avoid the crowds at the most touristy sites.

If traveling in 2024, keep in mind that the city will be preparing for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, which may affect mobility in certain areas.

Day 1: Arrival & Le Marais 🍷

📍 Day 1 Route

1
Arrival Orly Airport
2
Place des Vosges (Victor Hugo House)
3
Centre Pompidou
4
Agoudas Hakehilos Synagogue (Jewish Quarter)
5
Rue des Rosiers
6
Dinner: Marché des Enfants Rouges

We landed at Orly and opted for an Uber (~€40) directly to our accommodation in Le Marais. It is the most comfortable way to start.

Our first stop is the Place des Vosges, the oldest square in Paris (1612), famous for housing the home of Victor Hugo. From there, we walk towards the modern contrast of the Centre Pompidou and pass by the Agoudas Hakehilos Synagogue, designed by Hector Guimard.

🤓
History

The Place des Vosges was inaugurated in 1612 and was the first planned square in Paris and an important meeting point for the aristocracy and cultural elite before Versailles.

We walk along Rue des Rosiers, the heart of the Jewish quarter. For dinner, the golden recommendation is the Marché des Enfants Rouges (founded in 1615). You have to arrive before 19:00 or many stalls close. If you arrive late, the bistro L'Aller Retour Marais is excellent for trying a pâté board and French wine.

Day 2: Gardens, History & Louvre 🖼️

📍 Day 2 Route

1
Jardin des Plantes
2
Pantheon & Sorbonne
3
Luxembourg Gardens
4
Notre Dame & Shakespeare and Co.
5
Lunch: Brasserie des Prés
6
Sainte-Chapelle & Hôtel de Ville
7
Saint-Jacques Tower
8
Opera & Galeries Lafayette
9
Louvre Museum (Afternoon)

We start by combining science and nature in the Jardin des Plantes 🌿, a great green space in the city. Adjacent you can find the National Museum of Natural History.

Continue towards the historic Sorbonne, known for its role in the research of Pierre and Marie Curie 🔬. The neighborhood is characterized by a distinctive academic atmosphere.

You must visit the Pantheon of Paris, the mausoleum of illustrious figures such as Voltaire, Rousseau, and Marie Curie. From there, head to the Luxembourg Gardens. Look for the small replica of the Statue of Liberty! 🗽 It was a gift from the USA to France.

Walk to the Pont Neuf (1607), the oldest bridge. From this point, the views of Notre Dame are impressive. The cathedral is in the process of restoration after the 2019 fire.

Opposite the cathedral, you have to see the Shakespeare and Company bookstore 📚, a place of great literary relevance that has been frequented by authors such as Hemingway and Joyce. The space retains its essence as a sanctuary for readers and writers.

💡
Comfort Food

For lunch, I recommend visiting Brasserie des Prés, where you must try traditional French dishes like sausage with mash 🥔 and onion soup 🧅

In the afternoon, visit Sainte-Chapelle, known for its stained glass windows, and the Hôtel de Ville. Head to the Saint-Jacques Tower, a historic starting point for the Way of St. James. We grabbed a pain au chocolat at Boulangerie Le Parisienne for a snack in Nelson Mandela Park.

The route should continue through the Jardins du Palais Royal, and then to the magnificent Opera Garnier. As the last stop of the afternoon, go up to the rooftop of Galeries Lafayette, which offers spectacular free panoramic views of the city, including an excellent perspective of the Eiffel Tower 🗼. Head to the Louvre Museum passing first by the Madeleine Church and Place Vendôme.

💡
Louvre Trick 💡

Entry to the Louvre is free on Friday evenings from 18:00, with prior reservation. This allows you to visit works like the Mona Lisa and the Triumph of the Republic with fewer crowds.

The day should culminate with a visit to the Louvre Museum, where I recommend entering at the last minute and focusing on the Italian painting area. Finish at Rue de Rivoli, observing the museum's night illumination.

In case you prefer to be guided by professionals and forget about Google Maps, I recommend taking this Indispensable Free Tour of Paris

🤓
History

The Louvre Palace, originally built in the 12th century, was transformed into a royal palace before becoming a museum. You should know that the glass Pyramid at its entrance generated great controversy initially.

Day 3: Palace and Gardens of Versailles 🏰

📍 Day 3 Route

1
Palace of Versailles (RER C Train)
2
Gardens & Trianon
3
Queen's Hamlet
4
Rue Cler
5
Champ de Mars & Trocadéro
6
Illuminated Eiffel Tower (22:00)

Dedicate the day to visiting Versailles 🏰, an indispensable excursion. This palace, built by Louis XIV, symbolizes 17th-century monarchical power. The Hall of Mirrors and its various rooms offer an unparalleled view of the splendor of the era. It is highly recommended to book the ticket in advance (approx. €30) and plan a visit of about 6 hours. The train journey from Paris is comfortable and takes only 40 minutes. The official site to purchase your tickets is Chateau Versailles. If you would like to hire a guided tour, I recommend this activity which includes entry tickets!.

🤓
Versailles in the 2024 Olympics

As a fun fact, the gardens of Versailles hosted the equestrian events and modern pentathlon in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games 🏇🏊‍♂️. In addition to the main palace, it is essential to visit the Petit and Grand Trianon, as well as the Queen's Hamlet, a fascinating complex designed for Marie Antoinette to simulate country life.

💡
Saving on Food

Dining options within Versailles tend to be expensive and limited. It is calculating to bring your own picnic, an ideal and economical option, especially if you plan to explore the gardens thoroughly.

For those who wish to cover more ground without getting so tired, the park also offers bicycle and golf cart rentals to traverse its vast expanses. 🚲

🤓
Historical Curiosity:

Versailles, originally a hunting lodge, was transformed under Louis XIV into a palace symbolizing absolute power, with gardens designed to represent control over nature.

Upon returning to Paris, an excellent idea is to explore the Eiffel Tower area. The route can include the Pont de l’Alma and the Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral. If looking for a break, Rue Cler is the perfect place to stop and enjoy a beer 🍺.

To end the day, nothing better than eating a pain au chocolat from Maison Bergeron and heading to the Champ de Mars and Trocadéro to see the Eiffel Tower illuminated at 22:00 ✨. A truly memorable experience, despite the crowds.

💡
📸 Best Tower Photo Spots

To capture the best photographs of the Eiffel Tower, consider the following viewpoints:

  • Palais de Chaillot and Trocadéro stairs 📸: offers the most panoramic view.
  • Rue de Buenos Aires: a less touristy urban perspective.
  • Avenue de Camoëns: a romantic spot with a wrought-iron railing.
  • Rue de l’Université: an iconic street to frame the tower between Parisian buildings.
  • Pont de Bir-Hakeim 🎬: known for its architecture and for appearing in the movie Inception.
  • Rue Saint Dominique: a view from a street full of life.
  • Rue de Montessuy: offers an elegant urban perspective.
It is advisable to visit these places at different times of the day to capture different lighting.

3
Champs-Élysées
4

6
Montmartre Route (Vineyards, Moulin Rouge)
7
Sacré-Cœur

The morning should start with a visit to the Eiffel Tower. Make sure to go up early to enjoy the best views of Paris.

🤓

The Eiffel Tower is built with the same iron as the Statue of Liberty, a gift from France to the United States.

Subsequently, head to the Arc de Triomphe and walk down the Avenue des Champs-Élysées, a main artery combining luxury and history.

For lunch, an excellent option is to reserve at Pink Mamma , an Italian restaurant in Montmartre. Before arriving, it is worth exploring Parc Monceau, a serene and very well-kept space.

In the afternoon, it is recommended to delve into Montmartre, ideally with a guided tour ( Free Tour of the Montmartre district) starting at the Moulin Rouge. The tour should include key points of interest such as Vincent Van Gogh's former home and Pablo Picasso's first studio.

One of the highlights not to be missed is the Montmartre vineyard 🍇, saved from urbanization in the 30s thanks to the mobilization of artists and intellectuals. The harvest is celebrated annually at the famous Fête des Vendanges.

🤓
Urban Fact

Montmartre is protected by laws that prevent modern construction, helping to preserve its historic and bohemian character.

It is also interesting to visit the cabaret Lapin Agile 🎶, known for having been a regular meeting point for artists and writers in the late 19th century.

💡
Tourist Warning 💡:

Montmartre is a busy area. It is recommended to be aware of personal belongings, especially in areas with the highest influx, such as the stairs of the Sacré-Cœur.

Other essential points of interest are the Wall of Love (Le mur des je t'aime) and the Maison Rose. This neighborhood was home to artists such as Modigliani and Utrillo, and still retains an atmosphere that evokes its rich creative past.

To culminate the route, nothing better than the Sacré-Cœur, which offers impressive panoramic views. For dinner, a good nearby suggestion is La Fresh .

🤓
Historical Curiosity

Montmartre was a center of revolutionary activity during the Paris Commune in 1871, and its cafés and studios played a key role in the development of modern art.

💡
Recommendation for Touring Montmartre 💡:

Wear comfortable shoes. The neighborhood is best enjoyed by exploring its alleys and historic corners on foot.

Day 5: Invalides & Farewell 🛫

📍 Day 5 Route

Place de la Concorde
2
Grand Palais & Pont Alexandre III
3
Les Invalides (Picnic)
4
Montparnasse Tower (Views)
5
Montparnasse Cemetery
6
Orsay Museum
7
Dinner: Le Maryland

Dedicate the last day to the Les Invalides area. Start the walk at Place de la Concorde, a venue that hosted the BMX and skate Olympic competitions in 2024 🛹. This site also witnessed the French Revolution, bridging historical past with contemporary events.

Continue the tour towards the Grand Palais, which hosted the Olympic fencing events, and cross the Pont Alexandre III, known worldwide for its elaborate decoration.

It is important to check availability, as the Les Invalides complex may be closed to the public for official visits, preventing access to Napoleon's tomb. An excellent alternative is to improvise a picnic with sandwiches from Boulangerie du Musée and enjoy the gardens from the outside.

Later, explore the Montparnasse neighborhood and its cemetery, where figures like Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir are buried. Go up the Montparnasse Tower to enjoy a final panoramic view of the city.

Return to the center to say goodbye to Notre Dame, visit the Orsay Museum, and buy souvenirs on the banks of the Seine. The trip can ideally conclude with dinner at Le Maryland , a perfect place to enjoy a cheese and wine board 🍷🧀.

🤓
Place Concorde in the 2024 Olympics

The Place de la Concorde and the Grand Palais were key venues in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, highlighting the city's versatility in hosting large-scale events at its historical monuments.

The next day is for the return. Head to CDG airport at the scheduled time, using the metro (€12, approximately 1 hour journey) 🚇. We bid you farewell from Paris with the hope that you will return in the future.
