Over these 10 days you'll sleep several nights above 3,400m (Puno sits at 3,800m). Take the first days in each new city slowly: hydration, an easy pace, and coca tea are your best allies.
🇵🇪 Southern Peru Without Backtracking
This route adds to the essentials of Cusco the two great protagonists of the southern Andes that many time-strapped travelers skip: the Colca Canyon (one of the deepest in the world, with the flight of the condor included) and Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake on the planet.
The logistical trick is in the Colca excursion: instead of returning to Arequipa after seeing it, you have it end directly in Puno. You save an entire return trip and make the most of every kilometer. It's exactly what we didn't manage to do on our real 13-day route (there we only left it as a tip) and what this route — and our 20-day version — include in full.

Next, the full day-by-day guide of the 10-day route.
Day 1: Arrival in Arequipa
After the international flight to Lima, connect the same day with a domestic flight to Arequipa (1h20). Arequipa sits at 2,335m, much gentler than Cusco or Puno, so it's a friendly landing to start getting used to the altitude.
If you prefer to save on the domestic flight, there's the option of an overnight Lima-Arequipa bus (about 16h), the same one we used on our real trip. It's cheaper but eats a full day out of this 10-day route, so we only recommend it if your dates are flexible.
Take the rest of the day easy: a short walk around the center and an early dinner. Tomorrow it's the city in full.
Look for accommodation near Arequipa's Plaza de Armas, the usual starting point for free tours and Colca excursions.
Day 2: Arequipa, The White City
⛪ Sillar, Mummies & Colors
Start with a Free Tour through the San Lázaro District, the Plaza de Armas (with the Misti volcano peeking out behind the cathedral), and Mundo Alpaca.
🔴 Indigo Blue & Rust Red
Then, enter the Santa Catalina Monastery. It's not just a convent, it's a citadel within the city. Its streets, painted in intense indigo blue and rust red, contrast with the white sillar. It is, without a doubt, the most photogenic spot in all of Arequipa.
Almost the entire historic center is built with Sillar, a white, porous volcanic stone expelled by the Chachani volcano millions of years ago. It is lightweight, thermal, and sparkles under the Andean sun.
🐹 The Guinea Pig Challenge (Cuy)
For lunch, try the Cuy Chactado at a traditional 'picantería': a guinea pig fried under a flat stone so the skin gets crispy. Seeing it whole can be a shock, but it's an Andean delicacy with centuries of history.
🌋 Yanahuara Viewpoint
Stroll through the San Camilo Market tasting exotic fruits (granadilla, chirimoya) and head up to the Yanahuara district: its sillar arches frame the photo of the white city with the Misti Volcano (5,822m) dominating the skyline.
Get to bed early: tomorrow's pickup for the Colca Canyon is usually before sunrise.
Day 3: Road to the Colca Canyon
This kicks off the 2-day excursion to the Colca Canyon, one of the deepest in the world (more than twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in some stretches). Pickup is usually very early, between 03:00 and 04:00 AM, to make the most of the full day. This is the excursion that ends directly in Puno, without returning to Arequipa: See the 2-day Colca excursion ending in Puno.
🦙 Salinas y Aguada Blanca National Reserve
The route crosses this reserve at over 4,000m, home to free-roaming herds of vicuñas (the wild species with the most expensive wool in the world) and with the Chachani, Misti, and Ampato volcanoes always on the horizon.
🗻 Volcano Viewpoint & the Patapampa Pass
The highest point of the day is the Patapampa Pass (4,910m), where you'll see the traditional apachetas: piles of stones stacked by Andean travelers as an offering to the Pachamama for a safe journey. From here, on clear days, you can see up to 6 snow-capped volcanoes at once.
The Ampato volcano, visible from the viewpoint, is where in 1995 the Inca mummy 'Juanita' was discovered — a girl sacrificed over 500 years ago at the summit as an offering to the mountain gods. Today she is preserved at the Santuarios Andinos Museum in Arequipa, if you have time before leaving the city.
♨️ Chivay & the La Calera Hot Springs
You descend into the valley to the town of Chivay, the gateway to the canyon. In the afternoon, it's customary to rest your legs at the La Calera Hot Springs, open-air thermal pools with views of the valley's mountains: the perfect finishing touch after hours on the road.
Night in Chivay or Cabanaconde (depending on the operator). Get to bed early: tomorrow's alarm rings very early to make it in time for the flight of the condors.
Day 4: The Flight of the Condor & Route Across the Altiplano to Puno
🦅 The Cruz del Cóndor
Early start (around 05:00-05:30 AM) to reach the Cruz del Cóndor viewpoint before 08:00-09:00 AM, the time window when thermal currents push condors up from the bottom of the canyon to soar over the viewpoint, sometimes just meters away. It's one of the most impressive wildlife spectacles in South America.
The Andean condor can reach a wingspan of 3.2 meters, the largest of any bird on the planet. For Andean cultures it represents the world above (Hanaq Pacha) and the link between humans and the sky gods.
🏞️ Maca, Yanque & the Bottom of the Canyon
Heading back towards Chivay, the route stops in traditional villages like Maca and Yanque, with their white-fronted colonial churches and pre-Columbian terraces still under cultivation. It's common to see traditional embroidered-costume dances in Yanque's plaza.
🚌 Crossing the Altiplano to Puno
Here's the logistical key to this route: instead of going back down to Arequipa, the bus crosses the altiplano straight to Puno (about 6-7 hours, with stops). The scenery changes completely: high plains, alpaca herds, and Aymara villages. You usually arrive in Puno at sunset.
There's also a single-day version (early pickup in Arequipa, condors at midday, and direct transfer to Puno that same evening), more intense but freeing up a day to enjoy Titicaca at a more relaxed pace. If it suits you better, check out the 1-day excursion ending in Puno.
Night in Puno (3,800m). You'll notice the cold the moment you step off the bus; bundle up for your first night on the altiplano.
Day 5: Puno & Lake Titicaca
🌾 The Floating Islands of Uros
In the morning, a tour of Lake Titicaca (see option here), the highest navigable lake in the world. First stop: the Uros Islands. The ground you walk on is artificial, made of layers of Totora (an aquatic reed) on floating root blocks. Families live, cook, and sleep on this giant hand-woven 'raft' that they renew every 15 days.
🧶 Taquile Island
You sail 1h 20min further to Taquile, a 'solid' island with more distinctly Aymara culture. Here, the men knit and the women spin yarn (the reverse of the norm). Lunch facing the lake with quinoa soup and grilled Andean trout. ⚠️ To get back to the boat you descend 530 stone steps; at almost 4,000m, every step counts.
🦅 Condor Viewpoint & Sunset
Back in Puno, climb up to the Condor Viewpoint for views of the city and the lake.
At the viewpoint you'll see animal statues representing the Andean worldview: the Condor (world above), the Puma (earthly world), and the Snake (underworld).
Cruz del Sur overnight bus at 22:00h (about €23). Arrival in Cusco at 05:00 AM. If you'd rather not stack up another night on the road, there's also the full-day 'Route of the Sun' (Andahuaylillas, Raqchi, and the La Raya Pass at 4,300m), arriving in Cusco rested around 17:00h.
Day 6: Cusco, The Navel of the World
After a night on the bus, it's finally time for a horizontal bed. 💡 Pro move: book the previous night even if your check-in is at noon, so you can drop your bags and sleep for a few hours right after arriving.
Cusco (3,400m) gets very cold and damp at night. Most historic accommodation does NOT have central heating. Ask for extra blankets.
🚶♂️ Free Tour: Incas & Colonialism
With your body somewhat recovered, a Free Tour through the Historic Center is the best introduction to the city: the Plaza de Armas, the San Blas district, and the famous 12-Angled Stone.
🥇 Qorikancha & San Cristóbal Viewpoint
Visit the Qorikancha (Temple of the Sun), where the Spanish built a convent atop the gold-covered Inca walls. At sunset, climb (slowly) to the San Cristóbal Viewpoint for the best views of the city.
Night in Cusco, now fully acclimatized for the trekking days ahead.
Day 7: Trekking to Humantay Lake (4,200m)
A serious early start (04:00 AM). After a 2-hour van ride you arrive in Mollepata for breakfast, then 1 more hour to Soraypampa (3,900m), where the hike begins. See the tour with breakfast and lunch.
The hike takes between 1.5 and 2 hours, with a steep incline and thin air above 4,000m. 🐴 If halfway up you can't go on, locals rent horses/mules (extra cost). Upon reaching the top, under the snow-capped Salkantay (6,230m), the turquoise color of the lake makes you forget the effort instantly.
Try to stay at the front of the pack. Seeing the mirror-like lake without crowds before the other groups arrive is a fleeting luxury.
The descent is quick (~1 hour). An Andean buffet included in the tour is waiting below before heading back to Cusco.
Night in Cusco. Tomorrow means another early start for Instagram's most famous mountain.
Day 8: Rainbow Mountain & The Secret of the Red Valley
Vinicunca (5,200m): the most famous, but also the most crowded. A 3km hike with a demanding incline. View excursion.
Palccoyo (4,900m): the less crowded alternative. Several colored mountains instead of one, slightly lower altitude, a much shorter and easier hike (~1h one-way), and a curious nearby 'stone forest'. Ideal if you prefer peace and quiet over the most famous photo.
If you choose Vinicunca: after a 2-3 hour ride, you arrive in Cusipata for the buffet breakfast, and the 3km hike starts from Chillihuani. The climb is a physical challenge: you're higher than the summit of Mont Blanc.
That immense snowy peak dominating the horizon from the summit is Ausangate (6,384m), the highest mountain in the region and the most sacred 'Apu' for the locals.
🔴 Plan B: The Red Valley
If you go to Vinicunca and have extra time, ask the guide about the Red Valley: 30-40 extra minutes of hiking and a small local fee, but it's usually the best part of the day — a Martian landscape dyed intense red, almost always in solitude.
Last night in Cusco. Tomorrow we head towards the Sacred Valley.
Day 9: Sacred Valley of the Incas & Train to Aguas Calientes
Pickup at 07:30 AM to tour the Sacred Valley, the 'breadbasket' of the Incas: Classic Sacred Valley (Pisac & Ollantaytambo).
🌽 Pisac
First stop, the Taray Viewpoint. In Pisac, the archaeological complex at the summit and its artisan market.
⚔️ Ollantaytambo: The Living Fortress
The only Inca town still inhabited exactly as it was designed. Its terraces were resistance terraces to hold back the Spanish invaders.
Don't continue with the tour to Chinchero: stay in Ollantaytambo with your backpacks and catch the train to Aguas Calientes from here. You save 4 hours of travel.
In Aguas Calientes, ask for an interior room or one away from the plaza if you want to sleep peacefully.
Day 10: Machu Picchu, One of the 7 Wonders of the World
The big day. Get up early: climbing to the citadel first thing, with the morning mist and without hordes of tourists, completely changes the experience. Bus line from 06:15 AM.
- Bus Tickets: At Consettur.
- Entrance to Machu Picchu: Months in advance on the Official Website or via Tu Boleto Cultura.
3 circuits: Panoramic (views from above), Classic (urban citadel), and Royalty (lower part + the only one that allows climbing Huayna Picchu).
If you choose to climb Huayna Picchu, count on 1 hour of almost vertical Inca stone steps. Reaching the summit (2,668m) leaves you breathless, but seeing the citadel through the mist beneath your feet is one of the best views of the trip.
The return train to Cusco takes 4 hours. Leave enough buffer for the Cusco-Lima flight connecting to your international flight. Book a late-afternoon or night flight.
