Algarve in 6 Days: From Faro to the End of the World 🌊☀️

Day 0: A Nighttime Start ✈️🌙

Trips always have a point of uncertainty and you have to be ready to savor it from the very first moment. The connection from Madrid to Faro can be done with Iberia or Ryanair. If you go with the latter for its convenient afternoon schedule (ideal after a workday), keep its little lottery in mind: your flight might get changed, as happened to us, pushing departure back from 4 PM to 10:30 PM. 😅

This kind of hiccup can force you to delay picking up your rental car until late at night. ⚠️ Important warning: rental offices usually close at midnight. If your flight is delayed even further (something that with low-cost carriers can be a real risk sport), you could end up running to the counter 10 minutes before closing. Make sure you have the agency's phone number handy and let them know if you're cutting it close! 🚗💨

From the airport, head straight to your accommodation. After a long day, with just enough energy left to remind you that traveling is never boring, finally lie down in bed with a smile: the Algarve awaits you the next day.

Day 1: Cliffs, Surprises, and First Adventures 🌊

Start your first day in the Algarve with energy and get up early to squeeze every ray of sun out of it. Try to be parking at the famous Benagil Beach around 10:15, since it's one of the most iconic spots and the parking lot fills up fast.

You might arrive excited to grab a kayak and paddle into the legendary Benagil Cave, but get ready for surprises: if there's a red flag 🚩, strong wind 🌬️, or rough waves 🌊, every tour gets cancelled. 😕

💬 Our Plan B: don't get discouraged! Act like a real adventurer: change plans and set off on foot to explore part of the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail, considered one of the most beautiful in Europe.

Don't make the mistake of doing it in sandals… 😅 Or every kilometer will be a small challenge. When you reach Praia da Marinha, one of the 100 most beautiful beaches in the world, lay out your towel and jump in the water. That said, be prepared to come out covered in seaweed and dodging hidden rocks: swimming here can feel like an obstacle course!

With your appetite built up, head to Carvoeiro, a postcard-perfect village. For lunch, we nailed it at Casa Algarvia. The fish stew and the grilled chicken with piri-piri are a safe bet: generous portions, good quality, and a local vibe. Another charming option is Taberna Portuguesa.

After lunch, stroll through the white, steep little streets of central Carvoeiro down to its small town beach. Watching the houses cascade down to the sand is a postcard-worthy corner you have to photograph. 📸

In the afternoon, head towards Praia dos Três Castelos, near Portimão. It's a wide, clean stretch of sand that we probably liked more than Marinha: fine sand, no rocks underwater, and a fresh but irresistible sea. You can also walk along the shore through the natural arch that connects to the famous Praia da Rocha.

Even if the drive back to your accommodation is long, end the day with a night swim in the pool under the stars. It's the perfect way to close out a day full of contrasts. ✨

Day 2: Lagos, Between Tunnels, Flavors, and Endless Beaches 🌞🐚

Dedicate your second day to the farthest excursion: the historic city of Lagos, a place where the Atlantic mixes with postcard beaches and a vibrant atmosphere.

Start at Praia da Boneca. You get there by going down more than 200 wooden steps, but if you find the sand overrun with seaweed, don't worry. Salvation comes in the form of a rock tunnel that will lead you to its neighbor, Praia do Camilo. The secret here is clear: either you arrive very early or there's no spot left. Try to get there before 11:00. Plant your umbrella (very necessary) and enjoy! 🏖️

Lunchtime will take you into territory where Portugal never disappoints: the food. Lagos is a paradise, and although there are great options in the center, we recommend going to the most celebrated one: Restaurante O Lamberto. It's a bit out of the center, but its reputation for grilled fish and seafood rice is well deserved 🥘.

A small detail: watch out for the day of the week, because the seafood rice is sometimes only served on Sundays. If you go another day, order the grilled sea bass and the black pork secreto cut. What a delight! The fresh fish melts in your mouth. 💯

With a happy stomach, go let your food settle at Praia dos Três Irmãos. It's a wide beach, great for walking, with clean, blue water, perfect for a game of paddleball. If you go in the afternoon, arm yourself with patience with the parking.

As evening falls, head back to your accommodation for a pool dip to wash off the salt and end the day with dinner on the terrace under a starry sky. Watch out for curious mosquitoes! 🌌

Day 3: Golden Albufeira and the Charm of Tavira 🌊🏰

Sunday is beach day par excellence, so the sands will be packed. That's why we suggest a master plan: prepare a nice pasta or salad in a tupperware and enjoy it with sea views. A practical and delicious decision! 🍝

The plan is to cover beaches in the Albufeira area. You have options like Praia do Ninho de Andorinha or Praia da Coelha, but we recommend settling on Praia do Castelo. Even arriving mid-morning, you might get lucky and find parking nearby.

With your umbrella planted, give yourself over to the beach ritual: sun, swims, seagulls, and the odd salty dip. The beach has a lively atmosphere, crystal-clear water, and the option to rent kayaks if you're after some adventure. 😎

After spending the day in the sun, pack up a little early to head back, shower, and set off for one of the most special places in the Algarve: Tavira.

This small town of whitewashed houses oozes charm. You have to stroll calmly down to the Gilão River and wander its little market. The sunset from its banks will give you an unforgettable postcard. 🌅 Close out the visit by climbing up to Tavira Castle, which offers magnificent views over the red rooftops and the storks nesting in the chimneys 🪹.

Day 4: Ilha da Fuseta, Absolute Calm 🌴🌊

For this fourth day, repeat the ritual that works: homemade food so you're not tied to opening hours and have total freedom to enjoy the sea. Prepare a nice fresh salad and set off for a very special place: Ilha da Fuseta.

Just 15 minutes by car will take you to the port of Fuseta. There, catch the ferry to the island. The ticket is very cheap (about €2.25 round trip) and the crossing takes less than 10 minutes. Best of all is the frequency: boats leave every few minutes, so it's super convenient and there's no waiting. 🚤

Fuseta's beach will win you over from the very first moment. Much less crowded, it offers a relaxed atmosphere, blue waters, and, pay attention: no rocks, no seaweed, no waves. It's like a huge natural pool protected by the Ría Formosa, a perfect paradise for a calm swim, a game of paddleball, or reading under the sun. 🌞📖

With your skin still salty, night brings the final touch in the neighboring village of Olhão. This fishing town, known as the "capital of the Ría Formosa," has a historic center with North African influence and a lively port you have to see. Its red-brick market facing the sea is one of the most famous.

Take a leisurely stroll through its streets until you reach Petiscais, a cozy restaurant. We recommend booking ahead and trying their famous tuna tartare, the picanha, and fried brie cheese. The experience will close out your day with an authentically Portuguese flavor. 🍽️

Day 5: Sagres, Surf, and the End of the World 🌍🏄‍♂️

Having this extra day on your 6-day route, there's one place you have to consider a must: Sagres. Even though it's far away (it's the southwestern corner of Portugal), its wild energy is worth every kilometer.

Beaches for Surfers and Adventurers 🏄

Sagres is the mecca of surfing in southern Portugal. The Atlantic hits hard here, offering powerful waves and wild landscapes. Among the beaches you must visit are:

Cape St. Vincent 🌅

You can't talk about Sagres without mentioning Cape St. Vincent. For centuries, this place was considered the end of the known world, where land ended and the infinite ocean began. The lighthouse, built in the 19th century, is today one of the most powerful in Europe.

They say watching the sunset here is a ritual for every traveler, although many warn it tends to get very windy. Even so, the feeling of standing before the vastness of the Atlantic is unique.

Food and Atmosphere in Sagres 🍴

Fresh fish is the star. Note down these two spots: A Sereia (a humble restaurant right above the fish market where you pick your fish and they grill it for you. 10/10 flavor!) and Pedra do Gigante (right on the road, famous for its cataplana).

For the night, Dromedario Bar is a classic for beers with live music, karaoke, and that surf-town vibe where everyone ends up friends. As they say around here: "Sagres is a place where time stops: you choose the beach based on the wind, enjoy fresh fish, and feel that, for a moment, you've reached the end of the world."

Day 6: Last Dips Before Heading Home ✈️

The last day always has a bittersweet taste. If your flight leaves in the afternoon, make the most of the morning to enjoy your accommodation. Let the owners know if you want to stay a bit longer; with luck, they'll be kind enough to let you enjoy the pool without any hassle.

Between dips, light exercise, and reading in the sun, gradually say your goodbyes to those days of calm. It's the perfect moment to fully recharge before heading back: no rushing, no stress, just peace and quiet. 🏊🏼‍♂️

After lunch, pack everything up and return the rental car. Access to the drop-off point at Faro Airport is usually very simple and hassle-free, something you'll appreciate at the end of the trip. 🚗✅
