There's a very famous saying: 'Aqui nasceu Portugal' (Portugal was born here). And in fact, you'll see it written in giant letters on one of the city's walls. Guimarães was the country's first capital and the birthplace of its first king, Afonso Henriques.
To get there from Porto, you don't need to rent a car or spend a fortune. The best option is the urban (commuter) train that departs directly from the iconic São Bento station (or from Campanhã).

Once you get off the train, walk about 10-15 minutes in a straight line towards the center. Your first mandatory photo stop will be the stretch of wall reading 'Aqui nasceu Portugal' at Largo do Toural.
The Sacred Hill
Start strong by climbing (calmly, there's a slope!) towards the monumental area. There awaits the Guimarães Castle (10th century), where the first king was born. Entering the walls is free, you only pay a small fee if you want to climb the Keep Tower.
Right below the castle is the imposing Palace of the Dukes of Braganza. Its architecture, with dozens of cylindrical chimneys, will remind you of French châteaux. It's worth paying the entrance fee to see its courtyards and the impressive tapestry collection.

Go down Rua de Santa Maria, one of the oldest, most beautiful streets in the city, until you reach the heart of Guimarães: the Largo da Oliveira and the Praça de S. Tiago. These two adjoining squares, surrounded by arcades, are full of terraces perfect for eating.

Before leaving the center, look for a traditional pastry shop and try the Tortas de Guimarães, turnover-shaped sweets made of puff pastry filled with sweet pumpkin ("angel hair") and almonds.

It takes you straight up the mountain that overlooks the city, where there's a sanctuary, huge moss-covered granite boulders, and spectacular views of the entire northern region.
